How To Explore
The Exploring Work screen features a set of 9 locked safes, each hiding a different category of criteria that you can select to search for matching occupations. When you first enter this screen (or after you click
Reset All) you will notice that the first safe is unlocked (see the blue color around the dial?) If you run your mouse over this safe the dial will turn red and the handle will twist down. At this point you can click on the safe and it will swing open. You will see a description of the category of choices in this safe, and the right panel next to the safes will list the choices.
At this point you can either check one or more of the choices from this list, or you can click
Next to skip this category and unlock the next safe. If you check any of the choices from the list you will notice that the
Select button will appear. Click on this button to see the occupations that match the choices you have made.
The list of occupations shows the results of your choices in all categories, not just the current one.
To the left of each occupation is a number that tells you what percentage of your choices that occupation matches. For example, the number "100" means that the occupation matches ALL of your choices, while the number "75" means that the occupation matches 3 out of 4 (or 6 out of 8, etc.) of your selected criteria. The lower the number, the less the occupation matches your selected criteria. Click on the number to see exactly which choices are matches.
If you wish to return to the list of choices to view or change your selections click
Edit Choices. This will return you to the check boxes for the current category.
You can also click on a safe (category) that you have already passed to return to those choices.
Repeat these steps to work your way through all of the safes. You do not have to choose any option in every category.
In most cases, you do not want to make too many choices. You will find very few occupations that match a bunch of choices, especially if you make several choices in each category.
Exploring an Occupation
Once you have made at least one choice from any category you can view a list of occupations that match your choice(s). Click on any occupation to go to its
Occupational Profile (Occupation Information). You can also click on the
Print button to see the Exploring Work Report at any time after you choose at least one criteria.
Options
- Select:
Click to accept the choices you have made in the current category and view the occupations that match your choices in all categories. - Clear:
Click to reset the choices for the current category.- Reset All:
Click to clear all the selections of all categories and start over. - Next:
Click to advance to the next category (unlock the next safe) without making a choice in the current category. - Edit Choices:
Click to return to the choices for the current category. - Show List:
Click to view the occupations that match your choices in all categories.
