The Self Assessment module of CARES helps you identify occupations based on what you value in your ideal job or based on your interests.
If you select the
I Want To Do The Work Importance Locator button, you will be able to take the on-line
Work Importance Locator to find your work values. This assessment can be very useful to you when exploring careers. It can help you determine what is important to you, then relate this information to occupations. The list is organized by education and training level. You can select any of the occupations to see specific details about that occupation, such as knowledges, skills, and abilities needed, required education and training, or job outlook and wages. If you have already done this assessment, you can enter your scores and view the results to see matching occupations.
You may also take the on-line
Interest Profiler after selecting the
I Want To Do The Interest Profiler button. This assessment allows you to identify new occupations based upon whether you believe you would like or dislike performing activities that other people do on the job. If you have previously taken this assessment tool, you may choose to enter your scores and go directly to the results section to see your matching occupations.
If you select
I Want to Enter My Interest Codes, you have the opportunity to search for occupations as they relate to specific interest types. These results can come from a variety of standardized Holland-based interest tests (e.g., ACT Interest Inventory, Career Assessment Inventory, Kuder General Interest Survey, Self-Directed Search, Strong Interest Inventory, and Vocational Preference Inventory). In CARES, you can select any one or two of the following:
Realistic,
Investigative,
Artistic,
Social,
Enterprising, and
Conventional as your Primary and Secondary interest types. If you select a Primary and Secondary interest type, the resulting list will reflect both types. For some occupations, the interests are so strong toward just one type, that only a Primary interest area is relevant.
After selecting your interest type(s), click on
Continue to see a list of related occupations, grouped by education level. You can select any of the occupations to see specific details about that occupation, such as knowledges, skills, and abilities needed, required education and training, or job outlook and wages.
Combining the results of these Assessment tools with results from other modules in CARES can help you identify occupations that correspond to your personal likes, dislikes, and values. There are no right or wrong answers for any of these instruments. They are only tools to help you find occupations that fit your likes and dislikes. The more honest you are with your responses, the more accurate the results will be.
